Collodon first described the system in an article in "Comptes Rendus" 1842, and described it again in 1884 in "La Nature". In the above illustration, water comes out of a short spout on the watertank and then falls through open air, as in a fountain. The device on the illustration's lefthand side produces light and directs a beam of light into the watertank. The demonstration of this "light fountain" needs to be done in a darkened room to see the effect.
