The Mahavihara Dhamma-vinaya University was ceremonially opened on the 12th of June 2016. It is located near Bodawnagone Village, Hmawbi Township, Yangon, Myanmar.
Objectives
ပြင်ဆင်ရန်The main objective of the University is to bring out the virtuous monks, well-versed in Buddhist scriptures and foreign languages applicable in propagating and promoting the Buddha’s sasana. There goes a Buddha’s pavacana “Sīlaparidhota pānñā pānñā paridhotam sīlem”, meaning, “Morality is cleansed by wisdom and vice versa”. In other words, wisdom and morality should always go together. Hence, the Mahavihara Dhamma-vinaya University aims at producing many more virtuous, learned monks who can follow the Vinaya strictly and undertake missionary works in foreign countries.
The objective of establishing this university is not merely offering degree programmes as it is done in any other national university. This is an institution that has been established, to conduct advanced Buddhist studies and to co-ordinate with the Buddhist universities and other academic institutions which offer studies of Buddhism and related subjects all over the world in the fields of research, training, spiritual practice and education based on Buddhism. To achieve these objectives, teaching methodology and discipline shall be in accordance with the words of the Elders (Orthodox Bhikkhus): “Live and Practice in Buddhist traditional Ways, teach in Modern Methods”.
History
ပြင်ဆင်ရန်The Mahavihara Dhamma-vinaya University originates from the wish of Most Ven. Vijjananda who is Presiding Sayadaw of Mahāvihāra Pariyatti Learning Center. His effort to develop the Mahavihara Forest Monastery has begun since 1364 Myanmar Era (the year of establishment can be more easily memorized by such mnemonic as “Icchasaya hnit coja Mahāvihā ti” or in the year 2546 sasana Era) (this also can be easily memorized by “kyi pwar lo thu kyaung gyi htu sayanbhu sasanā” (2002 A D). The Working Committee of the Mahāvihāra Dhamma-Vinaya University was formed at the first meeting held on the full moon of Wagaung, 1377 Myanmar Era (21st July 2015). The committee comprises scholars from various fields and well-wishers from the Rakhapura Missionary Organization. After a series of meetings on academic, administrative and financial affairs, the opening date of the university was decided to be 12th June 2016. The name of the university was chosen as Mahāvihāra Dhamma-Vinaya University . Hence it can be said that Mahāvihāra Pariyatti Learning Center gives birth to Mahāvihāra Dhamma-Vinaya University.

ပြင်ဆင်ရန်The Mahavihara Dhamma-Vinaya University was founded on 12 June 2016 with the motto of orthodox elders,“Live in a traditional way but learn through a modern methodology”, with a view to producing a virtuous learned monks . The courses for the 2018-19 academic year are to be opened on 4 June 2018. The diploma entrance examination is to be held for three days from 2nd to 4th May 2018 (from the 3rd to the 5th waning days of Kason, 1380 ME).
The Qualifications of Diploma Candidates (for the 2018-19 academic year)
ပြင်ဆင်ရန်The candidates must –
- not be older than 30 years but with 10 vassas (rains-retreat) already attained,
- observe the Vinaya rules strictly and love the Sasana so dearly,
- be free from the physical handicaps and
- be able to stay at the hostel inside the precincts of the university.
(A) The monks who are the holders of a Dhammacariya degree conferred by a governmental university or by a religious association or by a private Pariyatti Learning-center or who are the holders of the Samane Kyaw ( Sasanalankara) degree or who are the holders of the Mahavidu degree or the successful candidates in the Pathamagyi religious examination with a thorough knowledge of the prescribed texts for the Dhammacariya course must sit for the interview as follows.

(B)The monks who are the matriculated, undergraduates and graduates can sit for the entrance examination. However, they must answer the questions on the Vinaya_- the Patimokkha and Dvematika Patimokkha with their meanings on the first day and the definitions of the Vinaya on the second day as follows.

The students who get eligibility to the diploma class must take two four-month semesters for Dip-in-B. Dh and then three four-month semesters for B. A(B. Dh).
Remarks: English is to be used as the medium of instruction at the diploma level and above so all the monks produced from this university can deal with anyone in English for propagation of Buddha Sasana. The application form must be submitted by 30th April annually.

The Research Postgraduate programme leading to the award of M.A and PhD degrees aims to broaden and deepen students’ knowledge in Buddhist Studies . Candidates for the M.A programme are required to follow an approved course of study under structured supervision including coursework. The normal period of study is 3 years for full-time students . Candidates for the Ph.D programme are required to follow an approved course of study (which may include coursework) and research under supervision, the period of completion can be 3 years or 4 years for full-time students.
