There are four options that I've seen used on the internet for the display of Burmese characters.
- A fully Unicode compliant font, with associated display technology.
- A non-Unicode font that substitutes ISO-8859-1 characters (e.g. A B C D E) with Burmese glyphs.
- A font with Burmese characters in the Myanmar Unicode block, with additional glyphs added to overcome non-compliant display engines.
- Displaying dynamically generated PNGs (or GIFs).
This encyclopedia is using the third option at the moment. We are using an OpenType font that contains information on how to render Burmese characters according to the Unicode standard.
Two fonts that work are:
Fully Unicode compliant
SIL [၄] uses Graphite fonts, which contain information on how they should change dependent on the characters preceding them. The fonts are available free from here (direct download): http://downloads.mozdev.org/sila/fonts/padaukg.zip
Advantages
- Works with an OpenType font, and updated usp10.dll.
- Can use with application software (Note: Only with true, fully Unicode-compliant Graphite fonts, i.e-Padauk Gr Font, Graphite-font supported Open Office ver 2.0.0 [[OpenOffice.org], Mozilla's Sila-build Firefox ver 1.5 and Thunderbird][၅]
- Developed by a dedicated group specializing in font development, such as www.sil.org
- Supported by OS-Linux, FreeBSD, Apple OS 9 and OS X, and recent Windows versions (above ver 2000 Pro)
- Fast becoming indispensable for those who use the Burmese language
Disadvantages
- Different from the usual glyph-based method of entering text.
- Although Internet Explorer is notoriously nonstandard, people who want to use this browser might write to Microsoft urging full support for CSS as well as support for fully-compliant Myanmar Unicode fonts.

Solutions
It looks like using Node ue's font, MPH Yangon, along with an up-to-date usp10.dll (Uniscribe, which handles Windows font display) will fix the problems, so we can use proper Unicode without resorting to hacks.
Semi-Unicode- Faked Unicode
Sites like http://www.planet.com.mm/ use fonts that will allow something like pmtkyf? to be typed in, but manage to read with partial Unicode-compliant fonts mainly because websites like this are constructed with partially-compliant Unicode fonts.More discussions at http://www.planet.com.mm/forums/topic.cfm?forum_id=78&Topic_Id=48250 with appealing graphics. Some Faked Unicode fonts are ZawGyi, MyaZedi, BIT, Parabaik, XPartial, etc.
Advantages
- Needs to have one partially-compliant Unicode standardized font. (It is better to have one fully-compliant Unicode font than a partial one.)
Disadvantages
- Since there are numerous non-standardized Burmese fonts still available from the early days, though now becoming obsolete, many old Burmese websites, built with these particular fonts, are compelled to provide free download of the font they use so that visitors will be able to see and read the text. This is unnecessarily difficult for website visitors.
- Hard to display other languages (using CSS, however, it may be easier with <div class="english"> tags).
- Needs a specific font.
- Displays as gibberish if the required font is not installed.
Unicode block + additional glyphs
For instance, the font MyaZedi (partially-compliant) has some Unicode characters in the correct blocks, with additional glyphs added for accents.
- Will display as squares if font not installed. စာအုပ္၊
- Can be (nearly, so far) one-for-one transliterated from the non-Unicode font. [၆]
- Can be transliterated into fully-compliant Unicode (although conversion not as simple).
Advantages
- Only one fully-compliant Myanmar Unicode to use for website builders, emailers and websurfers.
- Now, multiplatform, multilingual, full Graphite-enabled Office suite-tested with Graphite Unicode Myanmar font from Open Office. OpenOffice ver 2.0.0 is available free.
- One can write letters, do databases or spreadsheets with a fully-compliant Burmese font that can be viewed, edited or printed easily by others using the same applications.
Disadvantages
- Needs a specific font (for many of the non-Unicode characters).
- For Internet Explorer to work, character set must be x-user-defined (rather than utf-8). This means that the UTF-8-encoded HTML must be converted to the &# format before being sent to the browser.
Dynamic PNGs
This is used at http://www.bagan.net.mm/ to display Burmese.
Advantages
- No requirement at all for a font that displays Myanmar characters.
- Viewable by anyone with a graphical browser.
Disadvantages
- Increased bandwidth and CPU use.
- Not a solution for editing.
- Impossible to copy and paste as text.
- Just one fixed size.

This font doesn't seem to be available anywhere, if you know where it can be found, please email pabs+at+zip+dot+to. Using a font that is proprietary to one operating system (MacOSX for e.g.), really isn't acceptable. Also, is this font more complete than "paduk", which is available from the sil.org fonts page? Also, what about burmese unicode keymaps/input methods?
- I've emailed this person with the font. MPH Yangon is a GPL font, but i want to check if the author is ready for its release before putting it on this site.
- Padauk with a graphite display, Xenotype on MacOS, and MPH Yangon on an OpenType compliant system, will all display unicode burmese correctly. Tristanb

Thanks for the info Tristanb. I was asking about this for burma indymedia, who are setting up their site, and are accustomed to using Wwin_Burmese all over the place, which they tell us is the standard way to enter burmese text in burma. Anyway, in the next few weeks, we'll be sending out a callout for people to participate in helping resolve their issues. There is a preliminary wiki page detailing some of the issues and ideas for solutions. I'd love it if you could correct any errors I might have made, and participate on the email list once we have started it up. Official Open Type Font From Myanmar Unicode & NLP Research Center
Myanmar NLP Research Lab have developed and launched (on October 12, 2005) the official Myanmar Open Type font, Myanmar1 (LGPL Licensed), in compliance with current unicode standards.

So Which Font To Use?
Can anyone who determine which font to use on Wikipedia be sure to make it accessible to others? The link to MPH Yangon (http://fixedsys.org/~node_ue/fonts/) does not work, .

I am using MyMyanmar (http://www.mymyanmar.net/) on Ru.Wikipedia, since I have no option...
By the way, what is wrong with MyMyanmar? Why we cannot use it instead of MPH Yangon , providing that it is freely available? For web in next three years, it's worth using MyMyanmar.(I disagree). And it's the most beautiful font on the web (especially when it's become very small size) and it's easy to implement and then, developers of MyMyanmar supports urgently on user problems. And also, it's Mac OSX compatible.
- I agree MyMyanmar is a nice looking font. The Unicode version MyMyanmar V is a definite option, although I have not been able to download it.
- I've updated the font page with the new recommended font, (Myanmar1 rather than MPH Yangon at the moment).

- Ma Khin Thwei: the whole point of Unicode is that it doesn't matter what font you use! I will try to contact Mark and ask him to put MPH Yangon up here. BTW, I'm unable to download MyMyanmar anywhere. UPDATE: I had a copy of MPH Yangon, so I uploaded it to a temporary part of my webspace until Mark gets a new site. Also, the people behind the old Myazedi font have updated it for Unicode, and are getting the Unicode standard updated to better support Burmese: http://www.openmm.org
Of Course, MyMyanmar V (Now MyMyanmar X). must be definite option for Myanmar Script. I heard it will launch around this new year. MyMyanmar X said that it will platform independent. MyMyanmar Pitfall
It's linked http://mymyanmar.host.sk to express pitfalls in MyMyanmar Unicode System. It's not right solution to store myanmar unicode text according to Unicode 4.1 Standards.
I found some pitfall in mymyanmar unicode font. MyMyanmar Unicode System supports two different encoding storage for 1 visual representation. It could not be done in rendering rules. So, I worried for use their products as a Myanmar Unicode Solution.
It may not true
If it is true that MyMyanmar have pitfalls and bla bla bla to refuse, Why MyMyanmar is properly displaying this my.wikipedia.org website which it is written using Myanmar1? It even looks prettier than Myanmar1 in this website. Why don't everyone listen what that person is saying and not try MyMyanmar? I think that person have some personal things with MyMyanmar. I downloaded and installed MyMyanmar according to their instruction and browsed this website with firefox browser. My computer have no Myanmar1 installed and I was surprised of what I was seen. A beautifully looked my.wikipedia website just viewing fine with MyMyanmar. Maybe you all should give it a try. www.mymyanmar.net
MyMyanmar Wrong Intention
MyMyanmar developer VOX has wrong intention on unicode encoding at MSVOLT community. It seem that he do not properly understand the Myanmar Unicode encoding. Their lastest MyMyanmar package include the Volt private version of Uniscribe usp10.dll which is non redistributable.
non-Unicode to Unicode Converter?
Seeing these Unicode Myanmar fonts, made me want to redesign/restructure a site only done in Myanmar fonts (currently using non-unicode: WinInnwa). The site is dhamadarna.net [၇]. There are hundreds of data already written about each audio clips. So there, I'll need a 'Converter' to convert all those to Unicode. As far as i have been through, I want to use "Myanmar Open Type Font" for the next version. Is there a ready-made converter tool out there?
Unicode 5.1
What will Myanmar Wikipedia do when Unicode 5.1 is released? Will it convert all existing text to conform to the changes and use one of the new fonts? Or will remain with the older version of Unicode (which would no longer be valid)?
