အသားအရောင်ခွဲခြားမှု ဟူသည် စနစ်တခုအဖြစ်ကျင့်သုံးသော လူမျိုးရေးခွဲခြားမှုဖြစ်ပြီး တောင်အာဖရိကနှင့် အနောက် တောင်အာဖရိက (ယခု နမီးဘီးယား) တို့တွင် ၁၉၄၈ ခုမှ ၁၉၉၀ အစောပိုင်းကာလများအထိ ကျင့်သုံးခဲ့သည်။ သခင်ခေါ် အုပ်ချုပ်သူလူတန်းစားကို အခြေခံကာ အာဏာရှင်နိုင်ငံရေးယဉ်ကျေးမှုအရ ပေါ်ပေါက်လာခြင်း ဖြစ်၏။ တောင်အာဖရိကတွင် နိုင်ငံရေးအရ၎င်း၊ လူမှုရေးအရ၎င်း၊ စီးပွားရေးအရ၎င်း နိုင်ငံ၏လူနည်းစုဖြစ်သော လူဖြူတို့က လွှမ်းမိုးထားသည်။ ထိုစနစ်အရ လူဖြူတို့သည် အမြင့်ဆုံးသော လူတန်းစားအခွင့်အရေးကို ရပြီး၊ ယင်းနောက်တွင် လူဝါခေါ်သော အာရှသားများ ရှိသည်။ လူမဲခေါ်သော အာဖရိသားတို့ကား နောက်ဆုံးမှ တန်းစီရသည်။ [၁] စီးပွားရေးနှင့် လူမှုရေးကဏ္ဍများတွင် အသားအရောင်ခွဲခြားမှုသည် ယနေ့အထိ ရှိနေမြဲပင်။ [၂][၃][၄]

အကျယ်ချဲ့ပါမူ အများပိုင်အဆောက်အဦများကို မသုံးစွဲရခြင်း၊ လူမှုပွဲလမ်းတို့ကို မတက်ရောက်ရခြင်း စသော မြင်သာသည့်ခွဲခြားမှုနှင့် အိမ်ရာရပိုင်နေပိုင်ခွင့် မရှိခြင်း၊ အလုပ်အကိုင်အခွင့်အလမ်း ဆုံးရှုံးခြင်း စသော မမြင်သာသည့်ခွဲခြားမှုဟူ၍ ပိုင်းနိုင်သေးသည်။ [၅] ဥပဒေအရ အသားအရောင်ခွဲခြားမှုမှာ ၁၉၄၉ တွင် ပြဋ္ဌာန်းသည့် သွေးနှောလက်ထပ်မှုတားမြစ်ရေးဥပဒေ (Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act) ဖြစ်သည်။ နောက်တနှစ် ၁၉၅၀ ပြည့်တွင် ပိုမိုမြင်သာသည့် တောင်အာဖရိကသားတို့ အခြားသူတို့အား လက်ထပ်ခြင်း၊ လက်ထပ်ရန်သွေးဆောင်ခြင်းကို ပိတ်ပင်သည့် လူမဆန်မှုအားဖြည့်စွက်သည့်ဥပဒေ (Immortality Amendment Act) ကို ပြဋ္ဌာန်းသည်။ လူဦးရေမှတ်ပုံတင်ခြင်းဥပဒေ (Population Registration Act) အရလည်း လူဖြူ၊ လူဝါ၊ လူနီ၊ လူမဲဟူ၍ ခွဲခြားထားပြီး အိုးအိမ်ရပိုင်ခွင့်ကို အထက်ပါအုပ်စု ၄ ခုအရ ခွဲခြားဆက်ဆံသည်။ [၆] ၁၉၆၀-၈၃ ကာလတွင် အာဖရိကသား လူမဲ ၃.၅ သန်းကို နေအိမ်မှဖယ်ရှားကာ တူရာတူရာပတ်ဝန်းကျင်ထံ အထက်ပါဥပဒေအရ ရွေ့ပြောင်းစေခဲ့သည်။ [၇] အိုးအိမ်ဖယ်ရှားမှုအများစုမှာ လူမဲတို့ကို တင်ကြိုသတ်မှတ်ထားသော လူမျိုးစုအမိမြေ (tribal homeland) ခေါ်သော နေရာများသို့ ပို့ခြင်းဖြစ်သည်။ ယင်းတို့ကို ဘန်တူစတန်မြေများ (bantustans) ဟု လူသိများသည်။ ၎င်းမြေတို့အနက် ၄ ခုမှာ လွတ်လပ်ရေးရသော နိုင်ငံများအဖြစ် နောင်တွင် ပြောင်းလဲသွားသည်။ [၈] အစိုးရက ဘန်တူစတန်ရောက်သူတို့သည် တောင်အာဖရိကသားဖြစ်မှု ဆုံးရှုံးကာ ဘန်တူစတန်သားအဖြစ်သာ အသိအမှတ်ပြုမည်ဟု ကြေညာသည်။

၁၉၈၇-၉၃ ကာလများတွင် အမျိုးသားပါတီသည် အာဖရိကသားအမျိုးသားကွန်ဂရက်နှင့် နှစ်ဘက်သဘောတူမှုယူကာ လူမျိုးရေးခွဲခြားခြင်းရပ်ဆိုင်းရေးနှင့် လူများစုအုပ်ချုပ်ရေးတို့ကို ဦးတည်သည့် အသားအရောင်ခွဲခြားမှုဆန့်ကျင်သော နိုင်ငံရေးလှုပ်ရှားခြင်းများ ဆောင်ရွက်သည်။ [၉][၁၀] ၁၉၉၀ ပြည့်တွင် လူသိများသော အာဖရိကသားအမျိုးသားကွန်ဂရက်မှ နယ်လဆင် မန်ဒဲလားသည် ထောင်မှ လွတ်လာ၏။ [၁၁] အသားအရောင်ခွဲခြားမှုတားမြစ်ရေးကို ဥပဒေကြောင်းအရ ဆောင်ရွက်ခြင်းကို ၁၉၉၁ ခု၊ ဇွန်လ ၁၇ ရက်တွင် စတင်ကာ လူမျိုးစုံပါဝင်သော အရွယ်ရောက်သူတိုင်း မဲပေးနိုင်သည့် ရွေးကောက်ပွဲကို ၁၉၉၄ ခု၊ ဧပြီလတွင် ကျင်းပနိုင်ခဲ့သည်။ [၁၂][၁၃]
