NGC 3311 သည် ဧရာမ[၂] ဘဲဥပုံစံ ဂလက်ဆီဖြစ်ပြီး[၃] ကမ္ဘာမြေမှ အလင်းနှစ် ၁၉၀ မီလီယံ ကွာဝေးသော ဟိုက်ဒရာ ကြယ်စုတန်း၌ တည်ရှိသည်။[၄] ယင်းအား နက္ခတ္တပညာရှင် ဂျွန် ဟာရှယ်ဆိုသူက ၁၈၃၅ မတ်လ ၃၀ ရ်နေ့တွင် ရှာဖွေတွေ့ရှိခဲ့သည်။[၅][၆] NGC 3311 သည် Hydra Cluster ၏[၇] အတောက်ပဆုံး အဖွဲ့ဝင်တစ်ခုဖြစ်ကာ[၈][၉] NGC 3309 နှင့်အတူ Hydra Cluster အလယ်နေရာအား လွှမ်းမိုးထားသည်။[၁၀]
